MONSIGNOR CAPEL AT KENSINGTON

The white house standling: in "Wright's Lane, almost shoulder to shoulder with the hideous red-brick Hospital for Boys, has undergone a change of late years both as to its title and its tenant. It was called 'The Cedars,' what time those trees were represented in the plural number; but now that only one magnificent tree remains, the accurate ecclesiastic who dwells there prefers to call his home 'Cedar Villa'. The previous tenant was not troubled by scruples of this, or indeed of any other, kind, when fun and frolic were to be promoted. Before his guests arrived he would take a piece of soap and mark his largest miror with a compound fracture, and on entering his dining-room would profess unbounded indignation at the carelessness of servants. Tips for Applying Chinoiserie Handpainted Silk Wallpaper

Chinese Hand Painted Wallpaper
Handpainted Chinese Silk Wallpaper is a luxury wall treatment that in the past only the very wealthy could afford. Handpanted wall paper is still not cheap (although you can find Handpainted Chinese Wallpaper on eBay now) because it is painted by hand onto paper backed silk and takes weeks to prepare. Usually you send your wall dimensions to the makers - usually in china - and you need to take care to get all your door and window measurement drawn to scale on a plan because the artists can then arrange the design to go around your doors and windows without any unsightly breaks in the design. The effort and time is well worth it. You get a hand painted masterpiece with a design that does not repeat anywhere and the finished wall looks as though the painter was there on the spot and painted it all in person in your home.
I chose the dining room above the dado rail for a Chinese birds and floral branches design on a green silk background but it will look equally as well in any room. The Bedroom photo above gives an idea of how it can work in a small bedroom.

When your handpainted paper arrives it will be packed in rolls, you may need a specialist paper hanger to install the wallpaper. The maker will provide detailed instructions and recommendations, which need to be read carefully, and patiently considering that their first language is probably not English.

If you are an experienced paper hanger and want to do it yourself then you need to take extra care that your wall is flat and smooth, to prepare for the best result. Then you need to layout your pieces in order and find the initial the piece to start with, then you look for pin holes along the edge in the next piece that have to match up with the first piece so the pattern lines up correctly.

Another issue is gluing the paper to the wall. This is not like applying regular wallpaper - in this case you apply the glue to the wall- not to the back of the hand painted silk wallpaper  - this is to make sure your expensive silk wallpaper does not get stained by the glue.

To smooth down the paper on the wall you first place a piece of wallpaper liner paper over it to protect the surface while you smooth down the paper onto the wall.

Another tip I discovered is that if your design goes around doors and windows  to take extra care in positioning the panels and if necessary arrange for the final join to be over the top of the door or window, so that the designs along the sides  on each side of the door or window are positioned correctly.

If you are not worried about your budget constraints then you will probably leave all this in the hands of your decorator.  However you can cut costs by dealing directly with the Chinese makers and then managing the paper hanging yourself - which is how I wanted to do it and I am very pleased with the result. Tips for Buying Chanel on eBay: Treat yourself for the Holidays

The run up to the Holidays is a great time to look for genuine Chanel handbags and clothing on eBay.

Coco Chanel at work

eBay sellers of designer goods often save the best pieces for this time of the year so buyers will have a great selection to chose from.

One of the most searched for items on eBay is the chanel handbag, the chanel 255 and reissue bag is the classic, the Chanel boy bag is a hot new bag that has been making an appearance on eBay recently too. Following are my own tried and true tips for successful buying on eBay.

  • Be cautious about buying Chanel perfume at auctions unless the seller is a reputable seller - its difficult to know what you are getting in the bottle and some sellers seem to be unaware that is forbidden to send perfume in the mail without a special permit- see the big signs in the Post office.
  • eBay is a great place to buy a genuine Chanel bag, buy from sellers with lots of feedback and that use Paypal, check their feedback comments for any negative and neutral comments before your bid. Ask for extra pictures if you need to see more details. Read the full listing for their conditions of sale and return policy before bidding.
  • Chanel clothing is easy to buy if you know your size. Chanel sizes are true and consistent so once you know your size you will know what to look for. Sizes are European - a size 40 Chanel jacket should fit a 38-40 inch bust - like US size 6. If possible go to a Chanel store to try on for size. If you are buying on eBay expect to see a picture of the label that in is focus. Chanel Cardigans are also very popular.
  • If you see a chanel jacket you like check the label and description to see what year and season it was made. e.g the mark 06A indicates the 2006 Autumn collection, 02P indicates the 2002 Printemps (french for Spring) collection.
  • Fortunately most Chanel items I have bought on eBay were well cared for and barely worn and I have not had to return anything - but most have needed cleaning to freshen them up - I have even dared to hand wash a Chanel jacket myself with success using hand soap and cold water and drying flat on a towel.
  • Familiarize yourself with past season Chanel clothes by searching for online videos and pictures of past season collections. Youtube and fashion websites are great sources for runway collections. http://www.stylebistro.com is one of my favorite sites for runway pictures . I like to find the runway picture of anything I bought, so when I resell it later I have the picture for reference.
  • Last but not least, don't get caught up in a bidding war on eBay. Decide on a budget and stick with it. Add items you like to your watch list on eBay and watch the bidding but don't be tempted to keep on outbidding and go beyond your budget. New listings appear every day so you will have plenty of other chances to find your dream Chanel bargain.

Following is information I have collected regarding Arthur J. Capel, Boy Capel's father. Arthur “Boy” Capel’s Shipping Line

Captain Arthur Edward "Boy" Capel  CBE  (b 1881, d. 22 December 1919)

Here is a collection of information I have collected in my searches for information about the Chanel - Boy Capel connection. We can determine that Arthur Edward "Boy" Capel was a man of means coming from a well-to-do family whose learned his trade from his successful father. He was apparently not directly related to the upper-class Capel family well known in England at the time, his fathers parents having come from Ireland.
I have collected the following information here for my own reference and for anyone who is interested in the topic or may have something to contribute. The sources are cited inline.
